I am a practising artist working & living in the Calder Valley. I rent a studio at Platform One Gallery Todmorden.
I am also a member of Todmorden Art Group. I produce much of my work in my studio, were I have the space and light to develop and experiment to produce ideas. I exhibit my work in many galleries and also partake in the development and production of an annual ART SHOW. Hosted and organised by Todmorden Art Group that is held at Todmorden Town Hall every year, this unique exhibition is open to local and international artists and is a popular event that draws a large public attendance and showcases artists and craftspeople side by side.
Much of my work is inspired by nature. Landscape’s and sky scape’s evoke patterns with colour and forms which are constants in an organic environment. By looking and being in a place of nature, I am moved to produce a piece. A painting, photographing or just memorising the spot in which I have arrived. The woods, the moors the streets we walk, all reflecting the space about me.
I mainly paint in oil paint and use this medium to capture the texture and vivid hues from original inspiration. I feel this adds the weathered or bold mood to my works. I particularly enjoy using bright bold colour to capture the shape & shadow of the human form and to enhance the pose of a form I wish to capture in my nude studies.
I do paint a wide range of subjects, and find it impossible to box myself into a single theme or genre. Being an artist and having the confidence to push my creativity is what drives me to produce a piece of work. Creativity is an innate part of what I do, who I am and how I look at everything. This is becoming evident in my choice of watercolour colour & oil paintings I am currently researching.
The folk lore & traditions of “Animals” in art is a subject of great interest to me. Hares are a subject of choice and with this imagery comes an interesting representation of what this animal has and means too many cultures. The tales and traditions that are connected to hares through history represent many things to many cultures. Its form is associated with madness, femininity, sexuality and cunningness to name but a few.
As a result, people are constantly drawn to its form, showing fondness to a magical creature. And it is this character and charm that I intend to honour in my work. Linking the hares historical stereotype, and celebrate its symbolic presence. This route has also led me to produce romantic figurative paintings juxtaposing the imagery of “Mermaids” and “Stags” Somehow the cycles of the MOON SEA and EARTH are subconsciously interlinking with my creativity.
